Freak Out

JUST 4 LOLS Competition | 1st runner up

NUS Studios | The Architecture Society (TAS)

FREAK OUT is a design intervention at the School of Design Environment 4 (SDE4), where the well-curated tropically brutalist architecture becomes a catalyst / blank canvas for design students to unleash their creativity upon. Sporadically, placing spherical forms disrupts the rigid interior and facade of the institutionalized building. Insinuating a parasitic student-led takeover on SDE4 co-relates well to the ongoing pandemic and closure of spaces, such as the Platypus Food Bar.

White wallpaper is used to plaster open-air concrete walls to permit and appreciate graffiti as an art form. As opposed to a criminalized - vandalism & institute regulated act - spray paint, floor chalk, wall painting, marking & doodling.

Charmingly Changi Competition 2021 | 2021

CHILLAX @CHANGI seeks to present innovative ideas to repurpose the Old Changi Hospital to give it a new lease of life while retaining the architectural features of the buildings.

I segment the proposal into 3 parts: Compromising of the subleasing of a central Affordable Fast-Food outlet on ground level with Drive-thru and an extended viewing deck experience. As a direct result of proximity studies, to increase food variety in the Changi Point precinct.

Other features include the retrofit of a Heritage center combined with Gallery space from the opposite blocks of Indie maker space, as well as rentable lounge spaces, wheelchair lifts, and signages.

Mission: Unite 2020 (Cultivating Friendship) | 2020

I dedicate this park proposal to Marlyn & Arlyn, who were foreign domestic workers employed in Singapore.

But, met their tragic demise when a car rammed, killing both of them and injuring 4 others who were picnicking along the streets of Lucky Plaza. Which has become a hotspot for Filipinos in recent years.

Hence, to elevate this issue, yet not deprive the community of their past times on days off. We look toward retrofitting the mall carpark rooftop with upcycled bus stops, plastic shipping pallets, Astro turf, and shady & low-maintenance vegetation to meet the needs & honor the lives of Foreign Domestic Workers that are determined to the development of Singapore.

Good Ole Fun Cupboard is a means of promoting health and outdoor fun to bring back childhood nostalgia as well as a deeper appreciation of outdoor fun for the current younger generations in this era where technology has dominated our recreation landscape and the prevalence of side-effects caused by long-term usage of electronic devices. Much so since after the advent of smartphone technology has outdoor play has been substituted.

Symbiotic Lands

Jacques Rougerie Foundation

Architecture Competition - Sea Level Rise | 2020

Symbiotic Lands is an interdisciplinary study of geography, forestry & Landscape Architecture. To solve our future tense world with ever finite resources and more frequent natural disasters (ex. Indonesia & Borneo's Forest Fires, Hotspot & Haze)

Integrating peat lands & oil palm plantation habitats together as opposed to stringent policies to draw boundaries. The profitability of Oil Palms made many locals drain & degrade the peat lands to grow this crop.

The floating oil palm plantations bio-mimic Duckweed's buoyant air pockets, offering a flexible solution to the rapid land loss in Indonesia & Borneo coastal peat lands. Preventing further destruction to the fragile ecosystem, reducing carbon emissions & restoring native flora, in exchange for a smaller yield from potted Palms.

Inspired by the passageway dimensions, the lucky number ‘8’ in 8-Bit TUBE aims to be a haven for tech geeks & transport laypeople into a fantasy-like Arcade portal that is larger than life.

The design hopes to capitalize on the technological boom ongoing in Mainland China. This includes neighboring Chengdu province, 1 of the 17 tech hubs across the country, and hopefully, bridging it to Kunming, Yunnan.

Runway for Your Imagination Competition | 2020

AMUSEMENT PARK WORLD is a proposed entertainment district offering local's family & community bonding activities in a charming nostalgic setting.

The design inspiration takes off from the Art déco style (1910 - 1930) of the Airport's buildings. During this pre-television & pre-shopping mall period, Singaporeans frequented the three “Worlds” known as: New World (estd. 1923), Great World (estd. early 1930s) & Gay World (estd. 1936) amusement park. However, over time with newer attractions popping up over the island city. The parks gradually saw a decline in popularity, which ultimately led to their closure in 1987, 1978, 2000 respectively.

Since Paya Lebar Airbase has been closed off for nearly 40 years. This creates a mythical sense of curiosity amongst the general public about what lies beyond the fence. With the base once again reopening its doors, we hope to reignite the spark with the generation that grew up in that era and as an inspiration for posterity with our very own present-day Amusement Park “World”.

Pipelet @ Parklet 5

The Substation Propose-A-Parklet | 2020

The design aims to create the juxtaposition of a temporary retreat amidst the bustling Armenian street. Using the everyday PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipes to mimic an organically formed bamboo pavilion. In order to create an inviting & vibrant atmosphere, I inject lush greenery into the 2.5 x 5.0 m parklets,  to go against the sterile & uniform white pipes for a futuristic laboratory look.

With this installation, we wanted to evoke reminiscence of one who comes home to be greeted by home-cooked meals on the dining table shielded by colorful plastic mesh food covers. “When was the last time you ate at home?” is the message that we want to bring across in this exhibition.

ECOnnect @ Coney

International Building Design Competition | 2019

Awarded Merit Prize

As Singapore moves towards becoming a Smart Nation with plans for Punggol digital district & Millenials being more reliant on technology than ever before.

ECOnnect @ Coney aims to be a place where they can unplug from their devices and recconect back to people & nature IRL(In Real Life) in a flexible, collaborative & rustic working environment.

Key drivers of design are:

1. Having a Slant roof to create a hill topology that blends into the natural surrounding, creating an opportunity to collect storm water at its lowest point for flushing & irrigation systems.

2. Central Atrium space conserves mature Casurina trees & an existing nature play area and allow natural daylight to penetrate offices through high volume spaces.

3. Rooftop is planted with native plant stock to increase islands flora & fauna's biodiversity and help in the mitigation of urban island heat effect.

Singapore Garden Festival (SGF)

Landscape Design Challenge | 2018

Silver Medalist rep. Singapore Polytechnic

The theme for the year was ''Kaleidoscope of Colours'.

Being mesmerised by the psychedelic colours & crazy patterns of the Kaleidoscope which is reminiscent to the bold, funky colours and style of the 80s.

The Garden aims to take visitors on a nostalgic trip to the colourful past. With a vivid planting palette, holographic discs and other vintage elements, visitors will be struck by the choice of materials and colours present. A discarded CRT TV at the back sends forth a wave of red, purple and yellow plants, the colours inspired after the primary ones “red, blue and yellow”, towards the visitors. These 3 colours would eventually make up a myriad of colours, fusing and blossoming into flowers that would also display a prismatic quality, ever-shifting in the light to provide endless combinations of colours and hence, endless possibilities reflecting that of the future.

Dakota Crescent's Seal / Dove Playground Bench

Brief: Invites designers aged 35 & below to create benches that enliven public spaces & inspire the community through good design while preserving the memories of a beloved landmark via using remainder wooden plank from the Former National Stadium to build these benches.

Design: is derived from the remaining old school playgrounds in Singapore designed mostly by Mr. Khor Ean Ghee and with Dakota Crescent estate up for en bloc redevelopment it is unknown whether these last pairs of Seals/Doves playground will become extinct from our little red dot soon. Incorporating the sloping gradient of the curved slide to encourage a more comfortable seating experience for children and also instead of hiding the beauty of the weathered Ironwood (including all of its cracks & holes), the planks are oriented vertically to showcase & inspire both seaters and passer-by.
