Weaving Thresholds
//COLLECTIVE DWELLING
WITH CO-LIVING CORRIDORS//

Sampling the domestic scene of a balcony entrance, which treads the fine line between interior and exterior. Law Insider defines indoor as an area enclosed by 50% of vertical planes. Generating a 3-dimensional frame as a component for aggregation.

When interlinked over one another, it forms a plain woven language with vertical (warp), horizontal (weft), and ambiguous openings in between. This is complimentary of the site of Tiong Bahru, made up of old and new buildings that are interwoven by Five-foot ways thresholds.

The Collective dwelling comprises 33 studio apartments (bedroom & toilet) and 8 duplex units (2 bedrooms, 1 toilet & private living room), woven together by 2 large (4 stories) and 2 small weaves (2 stories). The high density of inhabitants gives rise to communal living spaces (5 common kitchens & 6 common living) through the enlargement of corridors. Which is interspersed throughout for residents’ daily use and promoting neighborly social interactions.

The design continues the weaving technique from within its dwelling units, to its common corridors, and out toward its facade. By alternating the extrusion of frame weaves, which varies the structure’s porosity. Further amplifying the initial concept of blurring interior and exterior boundaries.
